I first met and photographed Heather and her family a few months ago. You might remember the touching images that I captured as she nursed her newborn baby for one of the last times before having to take a break from nursing due to beginning chemotherapy treatments. You can view those beautiful photos by clicking here. In April, I had the honor of capturing another significant milestone in her journey of regaining her health and overcoming cancer. Heather, her loving husband, their two year old son and a wonderful group of friends all shaved their heads. Heather decided to shave her head to have control over one part of this journey. She wasn’t going to let the cancer take her hair from her like it had taken so many other things. She decided to shave her hair on her own terms. Her friends joined in to show support for Heather, along with donating their hair to help other cancer patients. This was a very beautiful afternoon full of love, friendship, laughter and hope yet it was also heartbreaking to see all that Heather and her family are going through. At a time in their life that is supposed to be full of such joy, it is really difficult to see the hardships that this horrible disease has made for this sweet family. I hope that Heather and her family will be able to look back on these images in years from now, when she is cancer free and feel good about how they took control where they could and made the best out of a difficult situation.
There will be a benefit for Heather on June 29, 2014. For more information you can check out these two Facebook pages. Lucia and Heather Wascak and Wascak’s Warriors
